About
us:
The Rockhampton
Orchid Society was formally established in 1955 although it had
it's beginnings in the city soon after the end of World War II
(1946) when a number of orchid growing enthusiasts gathered
regularly at a local Kent Street garage to discuss their hobby
and acquisitions.
In 1955 the
Rockhampton Orchid Society was established with the Foundation
President the late Allen Stenlake. History records that Allen
was President for 15 years and Vice President for 14 years
during the subsequent 40 years. We are looking forward to
celebrating our Golden Anniversary in 2004.
The Rockhampton
Orchid Society became an incorporated entity in 1988. The aim of
the Society is to encourage the conservation and preservation of
orchids and to assist hobby growers to develop their knowledge
and growing skills. To this end the Society maintains a
"new growers" group which meets monthly, usually on
the first Saturday afternoon of the month (excluding December
and January). Regular visits to members orchid houses and
topics of particular interest to the newer grower are discussed.
It is also another social aspect of membership.
Regular field
trips are arranged and these have ranged from inter-club visits
locally, within the State and, on one occasion, a two-week trip
to the Honolulu Orchid Show. Members exhibit and take part
in major orchid events within Australia and the triennial World
Orchid Conference. Our growers are well travelled.
Guest speakers
feature at monthly meetings when available and these range from
local, intra-state, interstate and overseas. Their topics
are wide ranging and benefit members with the different
perspectives or different types of orchids and broaden our
horizon.
The Society holds
two shows annually, in the flush flowering periods of Autumn and
Spring. Dates are variable depending on public holidays
and hall availability. Currently the shows are held in the
Rockhampton State High School Assembly Hall, Campbell Street,
Rockhampton (near the showgrounds).
